Solar energy works by converting sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels contain solar cells made of semiconductor materials like silicon, which generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight in a process called the photovoltaic effect. The electricity produced by solar panels is in the form of direct current (DC), but most homes and businesses use alternating current (AC) power. To make the energy usable, an inverter converts DC into AC electricity, which then powers household appliances, lights, and electronic devices.

If the solar panels generate more electricity than needed, the excess energy can be stored in solar batteries for later use, such as during nighttime or cloudy days. Alternatively, if the system is connected to the electric grid, the extra power can be sent back to the utility company through net metering, allowing homeowners to earn credits on their electricity bills. When the solar panels aren’t producing enough power, the system automatically draws electricity from the grid or stored battery energy to ensure a continuous supply.
